The University of Kashmir is currently facing a severe shortage of non-teaching staff, with over 500 positions left vacant since 2016 due to a lack of recruitment. This shortage has had a direct and detrimental impact on the university’s ability to carry out its academic and administrative duties effectively.

According to university officials familiar with the situation, out of the total 2,450 sanctioned non-teaching positions, including those on satellite campuses, only 1,900 are presently filled. The remaining 550 positions have remained vacant since 2016, primarily due to the retirement of existing employees.

This issue is further exacerbated by an annual exodus of 70-80 non-teaching employees retiring, which worsens the staffing shortfall. Several departments within the university are particularly hard-hit by this crisis. Notably, the Watch and Ward section, sanitation, hostels, examination wing, and landscape division each grapple with 30-40 vacancies.

The administrative block, Alama Iqbal Library, and the research center are also adversely affected, with nearly 100 technical positions remaining unfilled.
