Birthmark: You must have ever noticed that some children have a stain on their face or any part of the body, which is called a birthmark.

Why are these birthmarks there?

Why do some children have birthmarks on their body, is it a symptom of some disease?

When there is a scar or mark on any part or organ of the baby’s body since birth, it is called a birthmark. Birthmarks can be brown to black or blue in color. Such marks can appear on the face, body, arm or leg. Many children have a mark on their body since birth which remains throughout their life. You must have also seen birthmarks on the body of people or children around you. You know about birthmarks, but do you know why these marks are there on the body of children since birth.

Why are there birthmarks?

Most birthmarks form on their own and are not associated with any medical condition. It is not that the birthmark is caused by the mother doing something wrong or not doing anything during pregnancy.

Most birthmarks do not cause any harm, but some people lose their self-confidence because of them. There is a birthmark on someone’s face or arm, due to which they feel embarrassed.

Some parents think that the child’s birthmark can affect his way of life. Some birthmarks go away on their own even before any treatment procedure is chosen for the birthmark.

How many types of birthmarks are there?

There are two major types of birthmarks based on the cause – vascular and pigmented. There are sub-types of both these types of birthmarks.

  • Vascular birthmark: When blood vessels do not form properly, a vascular birthmark forms on that part of the skin.
  • Macular stain: Macular stain also occurs in vascular birthmarks. It appears as a pale red patch on the forehead, nose, eyelids or back of the neck. They are formed due to the widening of the capillaries.
  • Hemangioma: When the mole becomes large, it looks like a hemangioma. These can be on the surface of the skin or in depth. They are of red colour.
  • Port wine stain: In this there is a wine colored stain on the skin. Abnormal bleeding occurs in the blood vessel of the inner surface of the skin.

How to remove birthmark?

Most birthmarks do not cause any problems to the baby and do not require treatment. But if it is causing harm to health, then the birthmark is removed through surgery or laser treatment.

Vascular birthmarks can be easily treated with medicines. On the other hand, port wine stains can be laser lightened.

Hemangioma birthmarks tend to shrink on their own as the child grows, but if they are large, medication may help to shrink them. After this, laser surgery is also done to get rid of this birthmark stain.
